Former police officer Eric Adams took his oath of office on Saturday morning (local time) and took over the business of government in the US metropolis.
The 61-year-old – the second black mayor in New York history – was inaugurated at the New Year’s Eve party in Times Square. As the 110th mayor, he is the successor to the unpopular Bill de Blasio, who was not allowed to stand again after two terms in office.
Adams, who had been Brooklyn’s borough mayor for the past few years, had won the election campaign with promises of a balanced course between leftist and centrist forces.
His biggest task will initially be to fight the corona pandemic. In addition, the focus is on the economic recovery of the metropolis from the crisis – dealing with the police, which many New Yorkers view critically, is also likely to be a difficult task.
