Epic Games and Riot Games hit by the US government’s magnifying glass

Thanks to ties with the Chinese company Tencent

The US government has paid close attention to Riot Games, Epic Games, and other US organizations associated with Tencent. The Chinese conglomerate owns the studio in charge of League of Legends and a minority stake in the Fortnite development team. He is also a shareholder in Activision Blizzard, Roblox Corporation, Glu Mobile, Discord, Reddit and Snap.

According to Bloomberg, the American Foreign Investment Committee has sent a letter to the bosses of these companies in which they request information on security protocols related to the storage of personal data of users from the United States.

The measures against Tencent-affiliated organizations follow the actions of the Donald Trump administration against the owner of the Chinese TikTok platform, ByteDance. The United States announced a blockade of the site. In announcing the decision, the authorities referred to “national security”, accusing the developers of having links with the Chinese government. However, they allowed the application to continue as the US subsidiary was sold to a US company.

It is not known whether Epic Games and other organizations’ ties with China’s Tencent will affect the future work of companies in the United States.
