Entire region: Cycle expressway from Freiburg to Emmendingen and Waldkirch in motion – More than 180 interested people attended the virtual start of the public participation – Citizens can now make suggestions on the Internet

More than 180 people from the region took part in the virtual kick-off event for public participation on the rapid cycle route from Freiburg to Emmendingen and Waldkirch (“RS 6”) yesterday evening. In addition to the current planning status, the new website for the first major bicycle traffic project of the Freiburg regional council and the city of Freiburg was presented. From now on, citizens can submit their suggestions here on an online participation card: www.breisgau-y.de.

“The great interest in the plans for the RS 6 shows that the time is ripe for a new quality of cycle paths: fast, cross-free and wide. This creates a sporty alternative to driving by car. Cycle superhighways are currently being planned across the country. They are part of the transport turnaround towards environmentally and climate-friendly mobility, ”said Transport Minister Winfried Hermann. Twenty cycle superhighways are to be built in Baden-Württemberg over the next ten years. In addition to realizing projects in the state’s construction work, the federal and state governments provide the districts and municipalities with funding of up to 90 percent.

“With the cycle expressway between Freiburg, Emmendingen and Waldkirch, we want to encourage commuters and everyday traffic to switch to bicycles and thus reduce vehicle traffic. We want to involve as many people from the region as possible in the planning so that we can use their local knowledge and detailed knowledge to build a compatible and accepted route, ”said District President Bärbel Schäfer

“I am pleased that so many interested people took part in the event online. This shows that the topic is close to the heart of the people in the region and that it is worth investing in this special regional project, ”said Freiburg Mayor Martin Horn.

The planning of the 26-kilometer “RS 6” is comparable to that of a state road and correspondingly complex. It started about a year ago. The so-called scoping procedure is currently in progress, in which the scope of the environmental impact assessment for the project is determined.

Citizens can enter their suggestions for planning the RS 6 on a participation card on the Internet from now until January 31, 2021. There they can mark places and provide information. The topics received are collected for further planning and participation formats such as on-site inspections. The information from the population is evaluated by the planners and then published on the website.

Background information on RS 6:
The independent, continuous and wide route of the cycle expressway should enable trouble-free, safe progress. The traffic potential on the main axis in the Freiburg area is up to 12,000 cyclists a day – making the RS 6 a top spot in the state.

The RP plans and builds the total of around 21 kilometers of the rapid cycle route from the city limits of Freiburg to Waldkirch and Emmendingen on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport. The planning costs around 1.4 million euros. The Federal Ministry of Transport is contributing around 1.1 million euros of this. The city of Freiburg plans and builds the five-kilometer route in the city. The aim is for the RS 6 to be built by 2028. However, unproblematic sections of the route should be brought forward and implemented more quickly.
