Eni Discovers Giant Gas Reserves in North Ganal, East Kalimantan: A Significant Find in 2023

Jakarta

The Italian company Eni has discovered giant gas reserves in the Working Area North Ganal in East Kalimantan. The plan is that the gas will be processed at a processing facility in Bontang.

Head of SKK Migas, Dwi Soetjipto, said that the gas discovery in North Ganal would be connected to other projects. He said that the Indonesia Deep Sea/Indonesia Development Water (IDD) project would be connected to the Jangkrik Field on the south side.

“IDD has 3 fields, the two fields in the south will be connected to Jangkrik to extend the life of Jangkrik,” he said, at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Jakarta, Thursday (12/10/2023).

Meanwhile, Geng North will be connected to Rapak on the north side. Dwi said everyone would go to Bontang together.

“Then those in the north, including Geng North and Rapak, Rapak Field will be connected, they will build themselves and then they will go together to Bontang,” he said.

As is known, Eni reportedly discovered giant gas reserves in the North Ganal Working Area in East Kalimantan. The discovery of oil and gas ‘treasure’ is said to be one of the largest in the world this year.

Previously, Dwi Soetjipto expressed his appreciation for the discovery of significant gas reserves in the North Ganal Working Area, East Kalimantan, with an initial estimate of gas in place of 5 trillion cubic feet (tcf). This news was conveyed by the Head of Regional and Far East Eni when he met Dwi Soetjipto at the ADIPEC event (1/10) in Abu Dhabi.

With initial estimates of discovered resources of +/- 609 MMBOE (recoverable), this discovery makes the discovery at the Geng North-1 well one of the top 3 world exploration discoveries in 2023.

Dwi said, with the initial estimate of finding gas in place of 5 tcf, it will be one of the giant discoveries that will significantly increase gas reserves to support a sustainable increase in national oil and gas production and achieve the 2030 target, namely oil production of 1 million barrels per day (BOPD) and gas 12 billion cubic feet per day (BSCFD).
