Soccer ” The Premier League gave itself on June 8 to restart its season. The other British championships could follow.
The English Premier League plans to resume the season on June 8 behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the hope of ending it on July 27, Times Saturday. British football and other sports have had discussions with the British government over when they can resume, according to the British newspaper, only on “authorized grounds”.
Matches would take place behind closed doors, with a maximum of 400 people authorized, including journalists, only if they have been tested negative for coronavirus. All in preselected stadiums to limit the use of medical services.
Changing rooms more could be put in place to ensure better social distancing and players could be forced to warm up individually, already in match attire. If the main obstacle remains the lack of available tests, the Premier League will do everything to avoid a cancellation of the season, as was decided in the Netherlands, without a champion designated.
The British government plans to meet with all major sports bodies next week. The goal is to prepare for a general return to competition as soon as possible in the current context of the Covid-19 epidemic. Secretary of State for Culture and Sport Oliver Dowden told parliamentarians that he had “productive discussions” with British sport leaders about a post-containment recovery. The director general of the Anglo-Welsh cricket federation Tom Harrison also said that his organization had been invited to lead a group made up of different sports, including football, tennis and rugby, with the aim of preparing for the return to land.
Sports will be considered on a case-by-case basis, some may resume earlier than others. All in camera, in all likelihood, and in compliance with rules of hygiene and social distancing. In the sports world, the epidemic has resulted in the suspension of the football (Premier League) and rugby (Premiership) championships, or the cancellation of the Wimbledon tennis tournament. The new coronavirus has killed more than 20,000 people in hospitals in the UK.
