English clubs are queuing up for players that Ajax does not want to sell

There is a real chance that Chuba Akpom will leave Ajax in the remaining days of the transfer period. The French Lille OSC, among others, has already made an attempt in Amsterdam and according to Voetbal International, several Premier League clubs, including Crystal Palace, and teams from the Bundesliga are also keeping a close eye on the attacker’s situation.
Ajax reportedly already rejected a bid from Lille for Akpom. The French want to rent him with an option to buy, but the current number five in the Eredivisie is not interested in that.
However, Lille is not giving up and is ‘still trying to reach an agreement with Ajax in the background’. Despite this, it does not appear that Akpom will move to Ligue 1, as there is also interest from his home country England and Germany.
Crystal Palace, among others, sees merit in attracting the bench seat from Ajax. The middle-order in England has been quite out of form in recent weeks and could use an offensive boost.
In principle, Ajax is only willing to sell Akpom for ‘the main prize’. The Amsterdam team has few options in the front besides the 28-year-old right leg. Brian Brobbey is the undisputed first choice at the point of attack, but Georges Mikautadze has already left the capital. Ajax does hope to strengthen itself this winter with Julian Rijkhoff from Borussia Dortmund.
Akpom itself would not be unwilling to leave. He is disappointed with being Brobbey’s stand-in and hopes not to sit on the bench for another half a season.
At the winter training camp earlier this month, Akpom already spoke out about a possible departure. “There is interest, but I hope to stay at Ajax, because I really feel that this can still be a success story for me. But I have to play,” the attacker told VI at the time.
