Engie Electrabel scraps investments for lifespan extension of nuclear power plants

Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten (Groen) says in “To the matter” that she is pleased that “one of the largest operators in our country says that they are taking note of the coalition agreement and are participating in that coalition agreement”.

“That also means that the group is involved in the energy transition”, Van der Straeten continues. She also confirms the “legal exit calendar”, which means that the seven nuclear power plants will close.

But she adds that the government will evaluate the situation in 2021 and will therefore look at how far the energy transition has progressed by then and whether that is sufficient for security of supply. “If it turns out that there is a problem, we will also take the right measures.”
