Energy giant Total announced on Tuesday that it was partnering with Australian investment fund Macquarie to develop five offshore wind projects in South Korea, with a total capacity of over two gigawatts (GW).

Total has entered into a partnership with Macquarie’s subsidiary, Green Investment Group, “to develop a portfolio of five floating offshore wind projects in South Korea,” according to a statement.

The two partners have started wind measurement campaigns on the sites and intend to launch the construction of the first project of around 500 megawatts by the end of 2023.

New technology

“Our entry into floating offshore wind power in South Korea is in line with our strategy for profitable development of renewable energies around the world and contributes to our ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050”, commented Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of Total, quoted in the press release.

“With its solid experience in offshore projects, in cooperation with many Korean shipyards, Total is particularly well positioned to contribute to the development of this new technology in South Korea,” he added.

South Korea has significant potential for the development of floating offshore wind power, which enjoys strong support from the authorities. The country wants to accelerate the development of renewable energies by increasing their share to at least 20% of the electricity mix by 2030.
