Energy consumption in sleep mode – which devices are best disconnected from the network

This hidden consumption is due to the presence of a transformer that remains in operation even when the device is in “off” mode. It converts alternating current to direct current, continuing to consume electricity even if the device does not turn on.

Do I need to disconnect all devices from the network

It may seem that the easiest way to solve the issue of “idle” waste of electricity is to completely disconnect devices from the network that are not in use and are in standby mode.

However, before systematically turning off all electrical appliances in the house from sockets, think about the consequences. So, you should find a balance between energy savings and device safety.

Turning off certain devices, such as washing machines and dishwashers immediately after work, can be counterproductive in practice, as they use the wait time to detect a water leak.

However, if you are away from home for a long time, it is recommended to turn off certain devices such as boilers, refrigerators and freezers.

In general, at night it is advised to turn off microwave ovens that “eat” a lot of electricity, electric kettles, blenders and toasters and other similar kitchen appliances from the network, do not leave computers and laptops connected to the outlet, and do not leave smartphones and the like on charge overnight. gadgets, which also negatively affects the battery life of the device.

Which devices and how much power are consumed in the off state

On website The State Inspectorate for Energy Supervision of Ukraine provides data on the consumption of electricity by various household appliances:

  • televisions consume about 1 kWh per month,
  • music centers on average 1 kWh per month,
  • DVD players – 0.5 kWh per month,
  • computers – 3.6 kWh per month.

The total energy consumption of household appliances in standby mode (“sleep mode”) can reach 350-400 kWh per year.

Recall that electrical appliances connected through an extension cord consume energy even when they are not in use. Therefore, either disconnect the extension cord from the outlet, or remove the plugs of the devices connected to it.
