End of Scottish football season depends on vote Dundee FC | NOW

A large majority of professional clubs in Scotland voted on Friday to end the football season immediately. Nevertheless, it depends on Championship club Dundee FC whether the competition can actually be stopped.

Of the 42 Scottish clubs at the top four levels, 33 voted to stop the competitions on Friday. Six clubs hope to continue playing and three clubs have not yet submitted their votes.

One of those clubs is Dundee FC, which is third in the Championship. Arch rival Dundee United is currently the second tier leader in Scotland.

Per league, 75 percent of clubs must vote in favor of the Scottish League (SPFL) resolution for the proposal to take effect. In the Premier League and League 1 and League 2 that majority has been achieved, the waiting is still for the last vote of Dundee.

SPFL voting result

  • Premier League (majority of 9 required): 10 for, 1 against, 1 not yet voted
  • Championship: (majority of 8 required): 7 for, 2 against, 1 not yet voted
  • League 1 & 2: (majority of 15 required): 16 for, 3 against, 1 not yet voted

Celtic champion if resolution is passed

The SPFL understands Dundee’s wait and see approach. “It is very important that clubs make a careful decision. We are very grateful for the clubs that have already voted.”

“With the Premiership and League 1 and 2 adopting the resolution, we are now awaiting a ballot from one Championship club. We will update as soon as possible if there is any news to report,” said the SPFL.

The SPFL presented the resolution on Wednesday, in which all clubs get one point per game that is still to be played. If the resolution is approved, Celtic will be champion of Scotland. The Glasgow club is thirteen points ahead of arch rival Rangers.

According to the league’s statutes, the clubs will have 28 days to cast their votes, but the SPFL asked the clubs to do so before 5 PM on Friday.

Dundee expects to give an answer early next week

Dundee says it expects to make a decision “early next week”. “As everyone knows, many clubs are currently struggling,” Dundee reports on his website. “We are all in the same boat.”

According to Dundee, too little attention has been paid to the financial side of the plan. “We are pleased with the hard work of the SPFL to work out this proposal in a short time. However, we believe that the proposal should take into account both sporting and the financial consequences of the discontinuation of the competitions.”

“Some clubs will lose £ 4 million (4.5 million euros) if this plan is implemented and we believe that no club should want to put on a fellow club.”

The next few days there will be further meetings at Dundee and it must be clear whether the club will vote for or against. “Don’t get us wrong: we are working hard to make a quick decision through a democratic process and that is still achievable.”
