Preliminary results allow the colchicine study to continue to assess its effectiveness against COVID-19.
“The COLCORONA clinical study will continue to recruit non-hospitalized adult patients with COVID-19,” said the Montreal Heart Institute (ICM) on Friday.
The establishment follows the recommendation of the Independent Data Monitoring Committee.
“We are pleased to have reached this milestone and await the final results of the COLCORONA study to determine if colchicine can prevent complications in out-of-hospital patients with COVID-19,” said Dr. Jean- Claude Tardif, director of the ICM research center and principal investigator of the study.
The study aims to determine if colchicine can prevent the phenomenon of “major inflammatory storm” of the lungs, observed in adults suffering from severe complications related to COVID-19, it was said.
COLCORONA coordinated by the Montreal Clinical Trials Coordination Center is partially funded by the Government of Quebec.
