10:12 am | Coronavirus: Kazakhstan reinstates two-week containment.

Kazakhstan announced on Wednesday a new containment of at least two weeks to cope with the increase in infections with the new coronavirus, six weeks after the relaxation of previous restrictions in this Central Asian country.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev indicated on Twitter that the government has “presented a plan to reintroduce containment from July 5 and for a period of 14 days”. He added that this new containment would be extended if necessary.
Kazakhstan, which has registered more than 41,000 cases of COVID-19 and 188 deaths, is experiencing an increase in new infections since the relaxation of various restrictions in May, a situation which puts pressure on the health system.
This Central Asian country thus had only 11,000 patients at the beginning of June.
On Monday, Tokayev reprimanded the mayors of the country’s main cities during a video conference, deeming their efforts “insufficient”. He also asked officials to ensure stocks of medicines and beds are available to deal with “a second wave”.
