Empty promises of the West: Arthur Khachikyan on France’s assurances to Armenia

The promises of the West, including France, to solve the problems facing Armenia are nothing more than empty chatter. Arthur Khachikyan, a doctor of political science at Stanford University in the USA, stated this to EADaily, commenting on Paris’s assurances of providing military and other assistance to Yerevan.

On February 23 in Yerevan, the French Minister of Defense Sebastien Lecornu stated that Armenia could receive Mistral missile systems from France.

“The more we strengthen our base of cooperation with Armenia, the more new opportunities we will offer. For example, today we discussed the issue of Mistral missiles. It’s very easy to learn how to use them. There has already been one discussion on this issue,” the French minister said at a joint press conference with the Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan.

According to Lecornu, France can also offer medium- and long-range weapons to Armenia for air defense.

“GM200 radars will soon arrive in Armenia,” the French minister noted.

He also stated that one of the important components of the implementation of joint programs is the retraining of personnel, an agreement on which has already been signed. In addition, according to him, a military consultant will be constantly present in Armenia. Lecornu said that the first delivery of defensive weapons has already been made, and Bastion armored vehicles will soon be delivered.

Meanwhile, according to the political scientist, all these conversations should be treated as fairy-tale manifestations. Despite all the assurances of France and the leaders of the European Union of a firm commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Armenia, the threat to the republic’s statehood not only remains, but is also growing.

“All these fairy tales have been heard for 6 years. Meanwhile, the West only needed one year to solve the problem,” noted Arthur Khachikyan.

He recalled the complete lack of reaction from the West to the events in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh – ed.), the same public today is silent about the situation in the Syunik region of Armenia.

“Yerevan never received real help from the West. At the same time, pressure on Armenia will continue to force it to continue to concede in everything. Six years of pro-Western orientation led Armenia to disaster: throughout this period of time everyone applauded us, and when the war began, everyone was silent,” said Arthur Khachikyan.

The expert noted that the basis of the threats looming over the country is the policy pursued by the Armenian authorities.

“This policy will continue as long as representatives of external forces are in power in the country, fulfilling all their demands and leading the country to destruction,” emphasized the doctor of political science,

Meanwhile, the expert continued, against the background of these assurances, the statements of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev are becoming more and more aggressive, because he understands that Armenia is in a rather difficult situation, and both Europe and Russia depend on Baku.

Azerbaijan, according to him, can at any time take advantage of the situation in the region, in which there is a regional conflict involving Israel, Palestine, Iran, and some groups in Syria.

“This is a fairly large regional war, and it creates favorable conditions for Erdogan and Aliyev, since they, taking advantage of this situation, will offer their services to the West against Iran. And in exchange for this service, as always, they will demand something related to Armenia, for example, the territory of Syunik – to make it easier to transfer their armed forces. We should not forget about the existence of a strategic alliance between Israel and Azerbaijan. At the same time, Russia is busy with the war in Ukraine, and does not want to conflict with Turkey and Azerbaijan. Our chances of finding an ally are very limited,” Khachikyan said.
