Employment Growth in Italy: 2023 Sees Increase of 481 Thousand Employed Units and More

On average in 2023, the growth, already recorded in the previous two years, in the number of employed continues with an increase of 481 thousand units (+2.1% in one year). This was revealed by Istat, underlining that the average number of people employed per year is 23 million 580 thousand. The employment rate of 15-64 year olds rises to 61.5% (+1.3 percentage points) while the unemployment rate falls to 7.7% (-0.4 points). The unemployed fall below two million, to 1 million 947 thousand (-81 thousand units).

Employment rate in the South is growing but the gap is 21 points

At a territorial level, the South shows the most significant increase in the employment rate in 2023 (+1.6 points on 2022, reaching 48.2%) compared to the North (+1.3 points to 69.4%) but the gap with the North remains high at over 21 points. This was revealed by Istat, underlining that the Center recorded an increase in the employment rate of 1.1 points, reaching 65.9%. The total employment rate in 2023 on average is 61.5%. The employment rate in the North, writes Istat, (69.4%) is 21 points higher than that of the South (48.2%) and the unemployment rate in the southern regions (14.0%) is around three times that of the North (4.6%).

Permanent jobs are growing, +493 thousand

Employment growth in 2023 mainly affects permanent employees, with 491 thousand more units (+3.3%) and self-employed workers (+62 thousand, +1.3%). However, fixed-term employees are decreasing, with 73 thousand fewer units (-2.4%). Istat finds it. In the fourth quarter of 2023, employed people increased in quarterly terms by 144 thousand units following the growth of permanent employees (+145 thousand, +0.9%) and the substantial stability of fixed-term employees and self-employed workers. On an annual basis in the fourth quarter the increase in employment involved permanent employees (+509 thousand, +3.3%) and self-employed workers (+65 thousand, +1.3%), but not fixed-term employees who decrease (-40 thousand, -1.4%).

In the fourth quarter +533 thousand employed over the year

In the fourth quarter of 2023, employed people increased in quarterly terms by 144 thousand units (+0.6% compared to the third quarter of 2023). Istat finds it. The employment rate rises to 61.9% (+0.4 points) while the unemployment rate falls to 7.4% (-0.2 points) and the inactivity rate for 15-64 year olds falls to 33.1% ( -0.3 points). Employment in the fourth quarter also grew in trend terms with an increase of 533 thousand units in one year (+2.3%).
