VIA Rail had to take special measures at its Montreal Maintenance Center after one of its employees received a positive test for COVID-19.

In a statement on Saturday, the passenger rail operator said the employee, who works at the Maintenance Center warehouse, had the result of his test on Friday evening.

“This employee was no longer at work since April 1, when he informed his supervisor that he was experiencing symptoms similar to a cold and that he had been in close contact with a person infected with the virus” , VIA said.

The company added that three other employees who had close contact with this person “were put in preventive quarantine as of April 1.” “They have since been informed by phone of their colleague’s positive test and will have to follow the rules of self-isolation and watch for symptoms over the next 14 days.”

VIA noted that “all of the steps surrounding the cleaning protocol have been completed” as directed by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

“A careful disinfection of the warehouse work area was carried out, allowing our employees to return to work safely and deliver the necessary parts,” said the transporter.

However, “specific areas have been quarantined and will be cleaned by an external specialized firm this weekend”.
