Emmendingen district: Helpers must also be safe – Sparkasse Freiburg Nördlicher Breisgau supports the 12 newly founded on-site helper groups with CO detectors

The deadly danger comes silently and unnoticed: carbon monoxide. Hundreds of people die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning. The number of unreported cases is high. But what if local chapter standbys are called to an emergency related to fire or an HVO response? So-called CO detectors help to ensure that the emergency services can be sure. They warn in good time of the invisible danger. The savings bank has already donated €2,300 to the on-site helper groups for the purchase of these detectors. The newly founded HvOs were now supported with €1,400. On Tuesday, May 10, 2022, Ruth Würstlin accepted the donation check on her behalf.

Life-saving missions are necessary, but self-protection must not be neglected. Marc Winsheimer, Head of the Social Commitment Department and Managing Director of the Sparkasse Freiburg Nördlicher Breisgau Savings Bank Foundations, also knows this: “We are delighted that we can support the valuable work of the DRK with this donation.”

“With the size of a mobile phone and attached to a backpack, the detector can always be carried and thus does not hinder the helpers,” explains Thorsten Konstanzer, chairman of the DRK local association in Reute and full-time head of rescue services at the DRK district association in Emmendingen. The measuring devices are not only small and handy, but also robust and low-maintenance.

Ruth Würstlin, district emergency manager of KV Emmendingen, is happy about the support of the Sparkasse: “The detectors monitor the ambient air permanently. That way you feel safer, even without respiratory protection equipment like the ones the fire brigades have.” If a critical level of carbon monoxide is reached, the detector warns the rescue services with a visual and acoustic vibration alarm. This way everyone can get to safety in time.
