It is the first tête-à-tête since the handover of power in 2017. Emmanuel Macron has been consulting several political figures for a few days, and it was François Hollande’s turn to return to the Élysée Palace on Friday, June 26. The two men discussed the economy and social emergency in a courteous and republican tone, according to the press release published by the Palace. “It took this coronavirus crisis for the two men to find themselves face to face”, Anne Bourse report in duplex in front of the Élysée. “They had lunch together for two hours”, relayed the journalist from France Télévisions.
In three years, “François Hollande did not spare his successor”, recalls Anne Bourse. “He regularly criticizes the policy of Emmanuel Macron, but we are assured that the interview was courteous and frank. (…) François Hollande insisted on the need to appease the country”, she says. The head of state had consulted Nicolas Sarkozy on Wednesday, but also for several days parliamentarians. “He consults at all costs to chart the new path he promised to the French”explains the journalist. A path which we do not yet know if it will be with Édouard Philippe as Prime Minister of an announced reshuffle.
