TVEmma Mackey (27) says goodbye to ‘Sex Education’ after four seasons. While attending the BAFTA Awards, where she won the Rising Star award, the Netflix star revealed that she would be leaving the series. The British actress will therefore not be seen in a potential fifth season of the popular series.
“Season five? I just finished season four last week,” Mackey told RadioTimes. “I don’t think I’ll be in the fifth season. I said goodbye to Maeve.” The actress had previously revealed that she would take a step back in the fourth season of ‘Sex Education’. For example, her character in the series would no longer be so dominant. “There are more characters, so I’m not as consistent anymore,” said Mackey.
Mackey isn’t the only ‘Sex Education’ star to leave the series after the fourth season. Ncuti Gatwa, who also stars alongside Mackey in Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’, has also parted ways with his character Eric. “Last day. Last time. Thank you for all the lessons and for all the strength,” he shared via Instagram earlier this month. In 2020, Gatwa won a Golden Rose for his acting performance in the series.

‘Sex Education’ follows the story of teenage boy Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield), whose mother (Gillian Anderson) is a sex therapist. The apple does not fall far from the tree. For example, Otis follows in his mother’s footsteps when he and Maeve (Emma Mackey) set up a ‘sex clinic’ in the abandoned toilets of Moordale High School. In this way, the two earn extra money and give young people sex advice. The latter is therefore essential.
The popular Netflix hit has received numerous critical acclaim in the past. The series was mainly praised for the refreshing and female-friendly way the coming-of-age story was delivered. The first season, which came out in 2019, has already been viewed more than 40 million times within a month.
It is not yet known when season 4 of ‘Sex Education’ will appear on Netflix.
