The rapper Eminem caused irritated faces with a surprise appearance at the 92nd Oscar gala on Sunday evening in Los Angeles. Eminem sang the song “Lose Yourself” from the film biography “8 Mile”. Lose Yourself was the first rap song to be awarded an Oscar in 2003.
The reactions in the audience fluctuated between amazement and growing enthusiasm. “The Irishman” director Martin Scorsese and his daughter made a very skeptical impression (the director seemed to doze off, or maybe he just closed his eyes).
After the performance, which was apparently accompanied by technical problems, Eminem was honored with a standing ovation. Also in the audience were Elton John and singer Billie Eilish, who looked rather perplexed at first.
Eminem hadn’t appeared on Oscar Night in 2003, so did he practice 17 years for the performance? In a tweet after the performance, Marshall Mathers quotes the song line “if you had another shot, another opportunity” and thus alludes to a second chance: Eminem apparently did not believe at the time that he could win.
Look, if you had another shot, another opportunity … Thanks for having me @TheAcademy, Sorry it took me 18 years to get here. pic.twitter.com/CmSw2hmcZo

To keep Eminem’s deposit secret, the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles was cordoned off during rehearsals. A few weeks ago, the rapper had heated discussions with his album “Music to Be Murdered By”, on which he slips into the role of gunman.
