Embassies in Russia support LGBT people with a rainbow flag

The Kremlin is not happy with the action. The Russians had previously criticized the raising of the rainbow flag at the American embassy. They say they hope that the foreign ministries of the countries involved intervene.

The US ambassador says in a video message with Russian subtitles that this is universal human rights. He spoke out against hatred, condemnation and persecution.

So-called ‘gay propaganda’ is prohibited in Russia. Showing love between people of the same sex is also not allowed. According to human rights organizations, gay hatred, violence and discrimination in Russia go unpunished.

50 years of fighting for gay rights

With their action, diplomats also drew attention to the Pride movement in the US. It has been 50 years since the fight for gay rights started. The Embassy of Great Britain shared a tweet that read in Russian: “Everyone should be able to live freely – without discrimination and persecution.”
