Elon Musk wants to implant the first “chip” in a human brain

The tycoon said he was awaiting government approval so his company Neurolink could test the technology it has already tested on monkeys in humans.

Elon Musk estimates that within six months the US government will authorize him to attempt his latest technological foray: surgically implanting a chip in the brain human which will allow you to connect to a computer via Bluetooth something that has already been successfully tested in monkeys.

When news of one of his own comes along companies, Neuralink, the tycoon confirmed that after years of research and experimentation, they are ready to start their tests on humans. “Obviously, we want to be extremely careful and make sure it works before we put it inside a human,” he said. This requires approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Among the advances presented at the event are the evolution of the responsible robot chip insertion and the purification of tungsten needles.

Neuralink has already tested this technology in monkeys. As a video released in 2021 shows, Pager (the primate with which the chip has been tested) managed to play a video game by controlling it with his eyes. On Wednesday, the Stanford Institute of Neurosciences, which supports Neuralink’s activities, said it was able to communicate the brain activity of two monkeys with a computer, which was able to move the cursor over the letters of a keyboard with its brain waves.

These advances, according to Musk, can be a major contributor to people’s health. “Once you are there, there are many things you can do, lots of health tracking🇧🇷 You can measure body temperature to detect an early fever or detect an early stroke because you would see electrical impulses from the brain,” he said. Although for the billionaire, one of the biggest uses would be to restore vision. “Even in cases of people who have never seen, who were born blind, we think we can restore vision because the visual cortex is still there🇧🇷 We are sure we can show them,” he said.

While Neuralink awaits FDA approval to test its product in humans, testing will be expanded to six monkeys and Pager will receive updates on your chip that will allow you to perform new actions.
