Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Elon Musk opens his voice about the reasons for shutting down the Starlink internet satellite network in Ukraine. He reasoned that he was reluctant to involve himself in ‘major’ acts of war.

It is known that Musk refused to install the Starlink satellite network in the port city of Sevastopol. Ukraine requested to activate Starlink in the area last year to aid attacks on Russia.

“The goal is clearly to sink most of the docked Russian fleet. If the request is approved, then SpaceX will be explicitly involved in war and conflict escalation,” Musk said in a post on the X account, quoted by Reuters, Monday (11/9/2023).

CNN citing a biography of the billionaire written by Walter Isaacson. Last year, a Ukrainian submarine drone filled with explosives approached the Russian fleet, but lost connectivity and became stranded on land.

Musk’s decision to reject Ukraine’s request was due to fear that Russia would retaliate against the attack with nuclear power. The 51-year-old businessman fears there could be a ‘mini-Pearl Harbor’.

Vadym Skybytskyi, who is an officer at the GUR Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, did not immediately confirm Musk’s refusal. According to him, further investigation is needed regarding the meaning of Musk’s refusal.

Meanwhile, a Pentagon spokesperson declined to comment on Musk’s decision. Previously, the Pentagon explained that SpaceX had a contract with the Department of Defense to purchase services to Ukraine.

“The department continues to work closely with commercial industry to ensure it has the capabilities Ukraine needs to defend itself,” the spokesperson said.

Previously, Musk’s SpaceX donated Starlink internet services to Ukraine and the local military. The company signed a separate contract with the United States (US) foreign aid agency.

SpaceX has provided 4,000 satellites since the start of the Ukraine and Russia war in 2022.
