Elio Di Rupo warns of the danger for democracy of a return to the polls

Walloon Minister-President Elio Di Rupo on Thursday demanded a “positive attitude” on the part of party presidents, following a day marked by comments in all directions on a note from royal informers, who are to present a report on Monday probably the end of their mission.

“The most important thing is to try to find a solution in the coming days, think of the citizens who are experiencing great difficulties,” said the former PS president on the set of “Jeudi en prime” (RTBF).

“I claim a positive attitude on the part of party presidents,” he added, assuring that that of the PS, Paul Magnette, has always been positive in finding a solution.

In the eyes of the Montois, going to vote again would be “a failure of democracy”, not only because the citizens voted in May hardly, but also because of the danger of a new push of the extremes, “of the extreme right in Flanders in particular “. According to him, there is a danger of arriving at the “end of the country” if the N-VA and the Vlaams Belang combine in a majority configuration.

Elio Di Rupo still does not seem to see any possibility of alliance with the N-VA. “Their only response to the contacts we had with the N-VA under the aegis of several informants was ‘we must split the country'”.

Regarding the future of pensions, he did not close the door to the idea of a universal pension after 20 years of career, which would be in the note of the informants. “Why not, but what matters is that people who have worked all their lives have a decent pension.” The return to the pension at the age of 65 remains “an objective” of the PS, but the socialist places rather the emphasis on the recognition of arduous professions. “Those who do not have the physical capacity to work beyond the age of 65 must be given the opportunity not to do so.”

The three main priorities of the PS, he said, are the minimum pension at 1,500 euros for a full career, an increase in minimum wages and the accessibility of health care.
