Elias Ymer Leads Sweden to Tie Against Brazil in Davis Cup Qualifiers

Sweden got off to a tough start in the Davis Cup qualifiers against Brazil in Helsingborg.

Karl Friberg, ranked 364 in the world, lost his first career Davis Cup match against 119th-ranked Thiago Monterio.

The set numbers were written as 3–6, 6–7 (5–7) and Sweden was at a disadvantage before Elias Ymer’s meeting with 241st ranked Gustavo Heide.

Ymer did not get off to a good start in the match and lost the first set 4-6.

Good serve returns

However, the 27-year-old was responsible for a strong recovery and first took home the second set 6-1 after breaking the brass’s serve twice.

– I thought I returned his serve very well, then it’s fun to play, says Elias Ymer to SVT Sport.

Ymer was then strongest also in the third and decisive set where the numbers were written to 6-3.

– A win is always a win, but it was a bit of a shame in the first with a break at four-four. But I had good concentration and it flowed well, says Elias Ymer.

The score is thus 1-1 in the qualifying match, which ends on Saturday with one doubles and two singles matches.

– Doubles will be very important and if we don’t succeed there, we have to focus on the singles matches.
