Electronic Arts ditches Origin in favor of EA Desktop

Electronic Arts is launching the new EA Desktop, a beta version of Origin’s updated online gaming service, which EA is calling its next generation PC gaming platform.

EA says the service will have faster downloads and updates, easier access to games, and the ability to connect with friends across platforms. Gamers will be using the EA Desktop app to access subscriptions like the recently renamed EA Play ($ 5 / month) and EA Play Pro ($ 15 / month).

“EA Desktop is designed to provide a seamless social media experience that allows players to get into their games faster,” EA Senior Vice President Michael Blank told GamesBeat.

The new app promises faster navigation, fewer clicks to return to your favorite games, and game time controls to help you keep track of how much time you and your family are playing. It will be easier for you to find and install new games or just play thanks to EA Play subscriptions, Blank said.
