The local newspaper “Jarva Teataja” reports that the power supply to 1117 customers in Paide was cut off on Tuesday, including the local hospital, the “Maxima” shop, several other businesses and families.

The hospital’s chief physician, Kilvar Mand, confirmed that the hospital is sinking into darkness. In the emergency room, electricity is supplied by generators, but it is not possible to supply electricity in this way throughout the building.

Mands informed that until the power outage all the operations planned for Tuesday have been completed and there are still no urgent interventions. It is permissible to send patients who need urgent surgery to other hospitals.

“No patient’s life or health is currently in danger due to a power outage,” emphasized the chief physician of Yervamäs hospital.

On the island of Saaremaa, schools and kindergartens were closed on Tuesday due to power outages caused by snowfall, but on Wednesday most educational establishments will resume operations. In some schools, classes will not even take place on Wednesdays, because the buildings have been without electricity for several days and the classrooms need time to warm up.

Estonian distribution system operator Elektrilevi said 4,000 customers were left without electricity on Tuesday morning, two-thirds of whom are on the island of Saaremaa. The electricity supply was to be restored to the mainland on Tuesday and to the Estonian islands by Wednesday evening.

7,000 Estonian households were left without electricity on Monday evening, after reaching 13,000 on Monday morning.

The power outages were caused by heavy snow and wind that started in Estonia on Friday evening.
