The securities of large European electricity suppliers have long been considered a typical example of a bulletproof investment: Those who invested their money there took little risk and could count on secure income. But with the opening of the electricity markets, the picture changed. When an electricity glut caused the wholesale price for electricity in Central Europe to plummet from 2011 onwards, the good times were definitely over. Many a European electricity supplier just slipped past bankruptcy.
