The election of the director of the Federation of Students of the University of Chile did not reach the minimum number of votes to be validated.
The results that the Qualifying Court of Elections of the student organization must make official indicated that only 14.33% of the students authorized to participate in the process cast their vote (4,562 validly cast votes).
These data were disclosed in a form enabled to report the process that was carried out during two days, online, with 35 virtual ballot boxes, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
As 40% of the students have not voted, a congress will have to be held to reform the entity. An interim table with the candidates that were presented would be in charge of carrying out this process and calling new elections.
Due to low turnout, it was not possible to extend the election one more day. This would have happened had it reached a participation below the floor of 40% and above 25% of the universe of eligible voters.
Five lists were submitted to the process, a right-wing list, an independent environmentalist list, an alternative from the Communist Youth, a radical left-wing list and a list from the Broad Front, under the heading of “Wake up the FECh”, which was the only one that exceeded a thousand votes.
Last year Emilia Schneider, reached 3,708 votes in the process and assumed as president of a temporary table since, like this year, the required quorum could not be achieved.
“The Fech elections ended and they did not comply with the statutory quorum, so a re-founding congress process must begin. It is urgent and there is no shortcut, ”said Emilia Schneider after this year’s process.
“We hope that the time that we were FECH directive we have contributed a grain of sand to the political processes that the country is experiencing and to restore meaning to the student organization. Without a doubt, there is a long road that does not begin or end today ”, express.
