The elderly with dementia, who had to move temporarily from Sommelsdijk to Vlaardingen in early April, are back at home in nursing home Nieuw Rijsenburgh. They had to leave temporarily because of infection with the coronavirus. Its distribution took place, among other things, through a church service.

It was not possible for the institution to isolate all infected elderly people living in residential groups. “You can tell a person with dementia to stay in the room because of their health, but there is a very good chance that this person will be back in the living room within five minutes, because the message has been forgotten,” explains team manager. Cobi Hogchem out.
That is why the infected Alzheimer’s patients were temporarily housed in a house of the Argos Care Group in Vlaardingen. There one of them died of the virus.
Pretty level-headed
The move did not particularly impress most residents, says Nieuw Rijsenburgh. “They reacted fairly level-headed. Some of the well-known caregivers and spiritual care went along and the contact with the family remained possible through video calling.”
Cobi Hogchem points out that the elderly are of the generation, who have experienced both the Second World War and the flood disaster. “As a resident recently said to an employee: oh girl, you have not experienced anything yet … Faith also offers comfort to many residents. One of them said: everything is in God’s hand, he takes care of me.”
Hogchem is pleased with the current state of affairs in Nieuw Rijsenburgh. “There are hardly any new infections and residents also recover. Take a resident of 107 who has recovered from corona and made all the newspapers.”
