El Niño Occurs, Increasing Risk of Extreme Weather Worldwide

The weather phenomenon El Niño has occurred, report researchers in the US agency NOAA. The consequence could be more extreme weather in a number of places around the world.

For months, scientists have been predicting that a new El Niño could be brewing. On Thursday, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) determined that the weather phenomenon had occurred.

– Depending on the strength, El Niño can have a number of effects, such as increased risk of heavy rain and drought in certain places around the world, said NOAA scientist Michelle L’Heureux.

In addition, temperature records can be broken. El Niño tends to give the global temperature a temporary boost.

The weather phenomenon occurs as a result of warming in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Climate scientists have previously warned that more extreme weather can be expected.

– We can expect unprecedented extreme weather every year in the future. If we manage to stop global warming, it will take at least 20 – 30 years before it stops getting worse in the best case, climate researcher Bjørn Samset has previously told Dagbladet.
