Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel Fattah was hospitalized after starting a hunger strike earlier this week. he also stopped drinking. Her family says there are concerns about her health and that is why the prison has decided to intervene. His lawyer says the law allowed him to visit Fattah, but the prison refused him entry.

Fattah is serving a five-year sentence for “spreading disinformation” and his action is receiving much international attention during the climate summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. He ate no more than 100 kilocalories a day for seven months. Last Tuesday he decided not to do it again and last weekend, according to his family, he also stopped drinking.

The 40-year-old activist and blogger has been critical of the Egyptian regime for years and hopes attention to his action will be his salvation. He also wants to force the release of others with a hunger strike. Several countries have asked the Egyptian regime to release Fattah.

Torture and executions

At the climate summit, representatives from nearly 200 countries gather to discuss talk about how they can slow global warming. Human rights organization Amnesty International says hundreds of people have been arrested in the previous period. They would be people who wanted to use the summit to demonstrate against the authoritarian regime in Egypt.

In the North African country, freedom of expression, the right to demonstrate and the freedom of the press are limited. President Sisi rules with a heavy hand and there is almost no opposition. Human rights groups claim that people are being tortured and that there are extrajudicial executions.
