Egypt estimated losses due to blockage of the Suez Canal

Ship blocking the Suez Canal damages the global economy

On the eve, 12 tugboats tried to steal the container ship, two more vehicles arrived to help them.

Egypt loses about $ 14 million per day due to blocking the Suez Canal the giant container ship Ever Given. This was stated by the head of the Suez Canal, Osama Rabi, in an interview with eXtra News on March 28.

It is difficult to calculate the exact amount of losses, since the fees that Egypt charges for the passage of the canal vary depending on the size of the vessel and the cargo, Rabi said.

He also said that as a result of the use of dredgers, it was possible to extract 27 thousand cubic meters of sand at a depth of 18 meters. Dredging work continues, Rabi said.

In addition, the head of the department said that 12 tugs had tried to pull off the container ship the day before: some of the tugs were pulling the ship from the bow, some were pushing the stern. Two more tugboats came to their aid.

At the same time, every day, during which the most important transport artery remains blocked, costs the world economy $ 9 billion, experts calculated. This is a tangible loss considering her condition during the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier, the media learned that the Egyptian authorities ready to go to last resort – partially unload the container ship.
