Suez Canal decided to expand

After the accident of the container ship Ever Given in March, which blocked the canal for six days, it was decided to widen and deepen it in some places.

The Suez Canal Administration began work on Saturday 15 May to widen and deepen the channel. This was announced by its head Osama Rabia, reports Al-Youm Al-Sabia.

“The development project will be implemented in several stages. The first phase includes the implementation of a project to duplicate the canal with the Small Bitter Lakes,” he said.

Rabia said that in this section of about 40 km, the canal is planned to be increased by 25%, which will make it two-way and safer for the passage of ships.

The project for the development and navigation course of the canal is aimed at laying an additional 10 km in the section from 122 km to 132 km, which will increase the length of the northern section from 72 to 82 km, in the southern part, a 30-km section will be expanded and deepened, starting from 132 km to 162 km of the canal.

Now work has begun south of the Bolshoye and Malye Bitter lakes in the area of the southern entrance to the channel, near which on March 23 stuck container ship Ever Given… 400 meter fromUdno was recovered only on March 29.
