Egypt.. a football league for drug addicts

The head of Al-Asmarat district, Ahmed Ibrahim, spoke to MEE "Sky News Arabia" On the details of the league, he said:

• It was launched by the Addiction Control and Treatment Fund in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Solidarity and the concerned authorities in Egypt.

• Its aim is to introduce the dangers of addiction among the population of popular areas nationwide, and to change the lifestyle of young people there towards interest in sports, especially football, which everyone loves.

• Teams of recovering addicts have been formed in popular areas around the world EgyptSo that each band represents a region, there are teams from Cairo, Alexandria, Giza, Fayoum and other governorates.

• These teams are approved by the Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction, and competition takes place between regions and some of them, and competitions take place on the playgrounds of the Asmarat neighborhood.

• The final match was held recently, and the cup was handed over to the champion and medals to the first three teams.

• The league witnessed the participation of about 150 players recovering from drug addiction this season, and it will be expanded during the coming period to include more numbers.

A celebration was held after the final match, in which about 500 of the recovered families and residents of popular areas participated. The ceremony witnessed singing and games for children, focusing on spreading the culture of maintaining health and rejecting drugs.

The director of the Addiction Control and Treatment Fund, Amr Othman, said that the league is part of many ongoing activities implemented by the fund in order to protect against the dangers of addiction.

Othman emphasized that "The most important and dangerous thing that the fund is keen on is avoiding the risk of relapse for the recovered, so there are continuous activities to attract them towards a life far from returning to addiction.".

He emphasized that the league achieved great success and a huge participation on the part of the recovered, their families and children, and"There are various other activities to reveal and invest the talents of the recovered, as well as the people of the developed areas as alternatives to slums".
