Education: This is how the Abitur works in times of Corona

For the second time, the Abitur exams in the Landsberg district take place under strict hygiene regulations. How the schools implement the regulations and why a high school can already plan the discharge ceremony

Minimum distance, ventilation, disinfection, mouth and nose protection: For the second time, the Abitur exams must take place across Germany and thus also at the four high schools in the Landsberg district under strict hygiene regulations. Only the test required for school attendance is not necessary. It started on Wednesday with the German Abitur, followed by mathematics on Tuesday, and all third Abitur examination subjects on Friday. The students will follow to the colloquia Pentecost ordered. The LT asked the respective directors how the preparations and kick-off went and also how the class would end.

At the Ignaz-Kögler-Gymnasium, eleven rooms were prepared for the 112 students, reports director Ursula Triller and explains that this involved a not inconsiderable organizational effort. And not only because of the hygiene regulations, but also because of other aspects to be taken into account: The groups were divided or put together according to the possibilities according to tested and untested students, as well as those who have already been vaccinated, have survived the disease or are just now are in quarantine at home and are allowed to leave it for the duration of the test.

Also, if possible, students should write their exam together with a time credit. In order to be able to accomplish this and to have sufficient supervisory staff available, material-supported distance lessons have been prepared for all other students. “Everything went very well,” said Triller, drawing an initial summary after graduating from high school in German. She also believes that the given topics were easily feasible. The director says about herself: “Today I don’t need any more sport”. After all, they drop by all the candidates and in the expansiveness of the school “there are a few kilometers together”.

At the Dominikus-Zimmermann-Gymnasium the almost 100 high school graduates were divided into 13 rooms. According to director Bruno Bayer, this makes tracking easier – if there is a positive Corona case. In addition to their own, a number of external students are also writing their Abitur exams at the DZG this year – for which separate rooms were also necessary. According to Bayer, there is sufficient supervision, also because there are no face-to-face classes on the exam days. The DZG director sees some organizational effort still to come with the colloquia. Here it is important to avoid group formation. Several preparation rooms have to be made available and the students have to be accompanied by a supervisor to their oral exam. About the preparations, Bayer says that the timetable was carried out in full – with distance, alternating and face-to-face lessons.

“The atmosphere was very calm and peaceful,” Alfred Lippl, director of the Ammerseegymnasium in Dießen, got this impression during the first written Abi exam. “In a large gym there are a lot of background noises such as coughing or movement,” he says, and that is greatly decimated in small groups. For the 91 high school graduates, 18 rooms could be made available, “two thirds of the teachers were assigned to supervise”. For the colloquium, Lippl expects that the effort will be a little less, since the examinees come to school according to their assigned times. The 80 students at the Rhabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium in St. Ottilien were and will be accommodated a little differently. “The day before, we called the high school graduates to a lesson,” reports headmaster Michael Häußinger and is pleased. “Everyone came.” The idea behind it: Anyone who wants to take part in face-to-face lessons must show a negative self-test, which, according to Häussinger, everyone has voluntarily submitted. “If the tests were positive, a doctor would have checked the results with PCR tests.” Fortunately, that was not necessary – the students could be placed together in the large triple gym. The same procedure will be followed before the two remaining written examinations.

And what about the discharge celebrations? That will only be in two months, says AMG Director Lippl, and the regulations are constantly changing. Therefore, nothing concrete is planned yet. At the moment, every process still has to be evaluated and reflected on, according to Lippl. Ursula Triller and Bruno Bayer made similar statements. Only in St. Ottilien are there already clear ideas. “We would like to hold the discharge ceremony in the monastery church, as we did last year, and broadcast the event to the ballroom via live stream,” said Häussinger. The monastery enables the use of the permanently installed camera for church services. So even the closest relatives can take part in the celebration. A pleasant side effect: “For the first time, we have the entire celebration available as a video.” In retrospect, we should have done that much earlier. “For the awarding of certificates, there is the idea of using the large open staircase and the cloister courtyard.
