Education – Strikes in Nigerian universities suspended after eight months

More than 100 universities in Nigeria have been on strike since February. (Keren Kuenberg)

This was announced by the president of the Asuu union, Emmanuel Osodeke, after a meeting with government representatives. He did not provide any details. However, the union warned that the problems have not yet been resolved.

The strike meant that students from public universities in Africa’s most populous country had not attended any classes since February. It is estimated that around 2.5 million students have been affected at more than 100 universities. The ASUU, the largest union of employees of state universities, called for a strike at the beginning of the year to ask, among other things, for more money. Strikes in Nigerian universities are common. But this was one of the longest for many years.
