Education. Higher education: the medical imaging expected at the Cormontaigne space

The project, devised a few years ago at the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul vocational and technological high school, remained in the pipeline a little longer than expected. Forced sleep due to the coronavirus.

But the construction work of an annex of the Algiers establishment in the heart of the Cormontaigne area of Thionville-Yutz will indeed start. The first shovels are imminent: “Before the month of December,” says Jean-Philippe Thiry, the director of the vocational and technological school. Students are expected for the start of the 2022 school year.

Why Cormontaigne?

Precision first. No question of undressing Paul to dress Louis. “On the contrary, we are committed to perpetuating the Algrange site and even strengthening it”, insists the director, anxious to preserve “the identity” of the school despite this duplication.

With, on the one hand, the imperative need to enlarge the premises, and on the other, the limits set by the environment with “a land already exploited to the maximum”, it was necessary to widen the scope of research to- beyond the commune. The purchase of the last plot in the Cormontaigne area, just in front of the IUT, turned out to be an opportunity to be seized.

For who ?

Initially, this relocation will only concern students in DTS medical imaging and therapeutic radiology (bac +3), i.e. a class of 60 out of the 740 students in LP Saint-Vincent-de-Paul.

The school establishment will therefore not be emptied of its substance, but the management has other ambitions: “We would like, subsequently, to develop other training courses, in particular in the arts. For now, the courses we offer range from CAP to bac, so the idea would be to develop courses in higher education and also turn to learning. “

What strengths?

“The axis is interesting in terms of mobility, we are close to the motorway exit and the bus station. “Behind pragmatism, the management of the vocational school intends to position itself in a“ student logic ”.

The future building will benefit from the proximity with the IUT, the Welding Institute, the UIMM Lorraine training center and the Crous, also located in the Cormontaigne space. “This is a new offer in the pool for students in the area and even beyond. One can imagine that Luxembourgers are interested. “

Thionville: student accommodation does not follow

Undeniably, the Cormontaigne space and its IUT are attracting more and more students. New “health, safety and environment” department opened at the start of the last school year, a building for medial imaging in 2022 … The campus is growing in good proportions.

Except that it is necessary to be able to accommodate the students, not all of them being from Thionville. A real problem, which the mayor of Thionville does not hide.

“300 additional students within two years”

“Currently, we are short of 115 housing units, and we expect the arrival of 300 more students in the next two years. We are therefore working on various solutions. The first: to reserve rooms in the future hospital hotel for students. The second: work with social landlords to find offers. The third, the one favored by Pierre Cuny: use a building at the station to create housing. “There is also a track on a field behind the IUT and the Welding Institute, announces the mayor. We are in a real dynamic, we must support it. ”
