EDUCATION: For UNSA, “removing technology in sixth grade is unacceptable”

The teachers’ union reacts to the announcement of the Ministry of Education.

Press release from the SE-UNSA union of Côte-d’Or of January 12, 2023:

The Minister has just announced the removal of technology in 6th grade to make way for math/French time at the start of the 2023 school year. The government is making one more mistake here.

Technology is an essential education that allows students to develop full-fledged and practical skills, promotes success and “boosts” their motivation. This discipline forms the bridge between school and college by introducing them to the ENT and teaching them, in particular, to use fundamental tools for their schooling in college.

The science block, which includes technology in 6th grade, will be de facto weakened at a time when our country lacks technicians, engineers and scientists and when the pool of post-baccalaureate recruitment is drying up in certain sectors.

Moreover, and contrary to what the Minister announces, it would be illusory to think that technology education could be reinforced in 5th, 4th or 3rd year or by taking hours away from other disciplines, which would be just as unacceptable. . The practice of “undressing Pierre to dress Paul” has never constituted a policy.

For SE-Unsa, technology is a discipline with a future. The government is making a budgetary choice without any educational basis. On the contrary, it must make every effort to recruit the technology professors it needs and make careers attractive. Funding for the extra hour of French and maths in 6th grade should not be at the expense of technology.

Departmental Secretary of SE-Unsa 21
