After months of preparation, 22,919 aspirants count the hours for the education exams that will be held this weekend, and in which they are offered 2,628 public jobs. This year’s is one of the calls with one of the lowest ratios in recent years: only 8 per place, compared to 11 last year, when 25,710 people showed up for 2,354 places.

Positions are offered for a total of 61 specialties, among them the bodies of teachers, secondary school teachers, language schools or plastic arts and design. Although it is true that the ratios vary between them, one of the most in demand is that of early childhood education, where 3,102 people will look for one of the 180 newly created positions, which means that there are 17 applicants per position. In the case of primary, there are 11 candidates per position; There are 250 places for 2,694 applicants.

The decision of the Xunta to maintain the system of eliminatory exams has encouraged those without previous experience to apply, as is the case of Sara Parga Pérez (24 years old), who prepares the tests for the first time. Sara studied primary education at the Universidade da Coruña and, after doing a research master’s degree, she has been preparing for these tests since October.

Less than 24 hours later, this young woman from Abegondo claims to be “very nervous and eager to see what happens. With the certainty that the done…it’s done!». These months I studied 8 hours a day. This last week they have been less: “I don’t think I could do much more than two or three times reviewing some outline. My last week was total chaos, concentration times are reduced a lot.’

Moved by his vocation, he presents himself because, he says, it is the dream of his life: “The greatest goal is to sow and cultivate in the garden of all and sundry what I consider public education.” However, he believes that the access system needs to be modified: «It is an unfair process, it does not define any of my colleagues, nor myself! I would like things to change, the criteria to be more unified and there to be a consensus around everything that the opposition to teachers implies.’ What is clear to him is that, for the moment, he has finished studying: “Today it is time to rest, dedicate time to myself and sleep early” and that when he leaves the exam, the first thing he will do is “sleep a lot.” Whatever the result.’

When and where

On this occasion the opponents will be examined in 14 different municipalities. There are courts in different centers of A Coruña, Santiago, Ferrol, Narón, Culleredo, Vigo, Pontevedra, Vilagarcía, Marín, Lalín, Lugo, Monforte, Ourense and O Carballiño.

As for the times and dates, we must distinguish between the bodies of teachers and the rest of the civil service. In the case of the first, they must appear tomorrow, Saturday at 9 in the morning and the tests will begin at eleven. The rest will be examined on Sunday the 19th with the same schedule.

Upcoming calls

Despite the announcement by the Xunta that it will call for almost four thousand teaching positions between 2022 and 2023, this year’s positions seem to be the best option for those applicants without experience, since in 2023 there will only be stabilization processes: a competition merits of 1,155 positions and an opposition competition of 125 vacancies that will favor the interim ones.

However, the unions have already asked the Department of Education that, in addition to these two processes, a call be opened to fill vacancies due to retirement.
