Edition Thionville – Hayange | Molten rock damages a machine at the Knauf site

The alert was given this Sunday, around 5 p.m. At the Knauf factory site in Illange, an incident prompted the mass arrival of firefighters. Protocol requires, taking into account the industrial activity of the site.

No less than seventeen emergency vehicles from the barracks in northern Moselle converged at high speed to the company that manufactures rock wool.

Sudden overflow

At the origin of this force deployment, an accidental overflow of rock at the level of a collecting tank located just under the cupola which carries the molten material. Usually this material is handled by a huge bucket machine once it has cooled. For some reason still unknown, it turns out that this magma was still hot when the craft approached and an unpredictable overflow occurred. The tires of the technical vehicle were affected by projections of the material and started to burn out.

Thick smoke would have been released from the hall to the point of being visible from outside the site. Several witnesses said they called the firefighters after seeing unusual smoke escaping from the factory bordering the A31, at the gates of Thionville.

After having mastered the fire on the tires of the gigantic machine, the firefighters remained on site to secure the installation, in support of the company’s internal rescue teams. No one was injured in the event.

The mayor of the commune of Illange, warned of the facts, went on the spot to keep himself informed. He left shortly before 7 p.m. with the assurance that the situation was under control.
