Ed Sheeran’s Subtract Sundays: Songs about Mental Health and Resilience

Sundays have become one of our favorite days of the week. And not only because of the obvious weekend, rest, having a drink with friends… but also because Ed Sheeran has turned them into Subtract Sundays (Sundays of Subtract). What does that mean?

Two songs without which the concept of this LP could not be understood, of which we already knew that it was born in one of the hardest and most complicated moments for the interpreter. This is also made very clear in the presentation that he makes of these issues on his social networks.

“Saltwater was written during some of the darkest nights before dawn, and the ‘what if’ that surrounds those thoughts. It was the second song that Aaron and I finished for Subtract and I really feel this. Together with Boat it framed what the record it was from the beginning” explains the English musician.

Songs that talk about depression, mental health and even suicidal thoughts as Ed Sheeran himself makes clear: “Saltwater is a dark song about what the last moments of someone about to jump into the cold sea could be like to feel free at 3 o 4 degrees. It was one of the first songs I wrote for Subtract and also ended up on the English coast. I think it’s a beautiful song and I hope you like it.”

It will be the second song from Subtract. Before that we will listen to Boat, of which the musician assures that “I wrote on the English coast, with very extreme elements in winter. Basically it is about feeling very depressed and not knowing how to make yourself feel better, but being determined that it was not going to be the end. The waves won’t break my boat. Boat is basically a song about resilience I guess. About feeling at your lowest and how you can get over it. I finished writing it off the English coast which is a beautiful area but also somewhat cold and desolate in winter. While I was composing the song, I was looking at the sea and those gigantic waves crashing on the shore. I thought it was a great metaphor about me, about what was happening at that moment. That’s where the verse from that the waves will never break my boat”.
