Economic, social and environmental council: Julien Nkoghe Bekalé shows his ambitions

Libreville, Saturday May 6, 2023 (Info Gabon) – The new president dreams of a new institution that is more open to the expectations and needs of the people.

A new wind is blowing at the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE). By officially taking the reins of this institution last Thursday during the handover ceremony with his predecessor, René Ndemezo’o Obiang, Julien Nkoghe Bekalé, the new president, announces a new era stripped of any wait-and-see attitude. “The economic, social and environmental council must stop being a sounding board and social demands,” he said. The new mentor aims to make the ESEC “a consultative assembly for strategic forecasting able to measure the impact of public policies, in line with the annual collection of the expectations and needs of the populations”.

Passing the baton, René Ndemezo’o Obiang appointed on January 9 as Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and the Fight against High Cost of Living, after having spent five years at the head of the CESE, above all urged his successor to grant particular interest in human-wildlife conflict. “Following the 2018 constitutional revision which saw the powers of the EESC extended to these issues, the thorny issue of human-wildlife conflicts, the economic, social, environmental and political consequences of which are getting stronger every day, would require lean more into it,” he said.
