It was a different kind of groundbreaking on Thursday morning on the Allmend Grüzefeld. There, works manager Stefan Fritschi (FDP) and Stadtgrün manager Beat Kunz planted a walnut tree – more precisely a shed bark hickory. The American exotic with its edible fruits tolerates heat and drought particularly well. Nevertheless, he received “sunscreen”: the trunk is painted white to protect the young tree from the heat.
The hickory tree and its 20 walnut colleagues on the Grüze-Allmend mark the start of the project «1000 trees for Winterthur. “That’s how many trees should be planted in the settlement area in the next three years. So on average one tree a day. “And additionally,” as Fritschi emphasizes. Replacement plantings are not counted.
