The EC Bad Nauheim suddenly has a current German national player in the squad. In the 2: 4 (1: 2, 0: 1, 1: 1) of the Red Devils on Friday in Freiburg, Colin Ugbekile was part of the team of the second division ice hockey team from Wetterau.
Together with Mick Köhler and the 19-year-old Czech Marcel Barinka, he came to Hessen from Cologne on Wednesday. “That the boys would play was only decided in the morning,” says Matthias Baldys, the sports director.
The injuries suffered by Daniel Ketter, Cason Hohmann and Stefan Reiter, none of whom had even started the trip to Freiburg, suggested that the training guests should be involved. “They are guest players, and that’s how it stays,” says Baldys.
The guests got off to a better start in front of 370 spectators. In the sixth minute, home grown Leon Köhler put his team in the lead. Andreas Pauli had presented an exemplary pass through the neutral zone. In a lively first section, the home side, who had to replace their import players Nick Pageau and Cam Spiro and who had played with Mirko Sacher as a guest player from Krefeld, only needed 60 seconds to turn the result. First Saakyan Ugbekile was able to steal the puck and surprise goalkeeper Felix Bick, then ex-DEL player Hult met from half-distance.
In the second half the home side had the clearer offensive scenes, but failed twice on substitute Philipp Maurer before Kunz took a rebound from the gang to 3-1.
The connection of Jamie Arniel for the now stronger guests (43rd) answered George to the final score.
