A telluric movement of magnitude 5.2 and with an epicenter located 11 kilometers northeast of Biscucuy, Portuguese state, was felt in Zulia, Caracas and other states in the center and west of the country.
Towards 11:10 in the morning of this Sunday, Twitter users began to report it from Trujillo, Carabobo, Caracas, Lara, Portuguesa and Zulia.
The United States Geology Service indicated, first, in its networks, that the epicenter was the population of El Tocuyo, Lara state, and its magnitude set it at 5.
The Venezuelan Seismological Research Foundation (Funvisis), an entity attached to the Ministry of Interior Relations, Justice and Peace, reported on its website that this Sunday, July 12, 2020 at 11:08 local time, an earthquake of magnitude was registered 5.2 to 11 km northeast of Biscucuy, and at a depth of 5 km.
Funvisis recommends remaining calm in the face of events of this nature “that are normal in Venezuela, since we live in a seismic country. We are in an important and complex geodynamic context due to the interaction between the Caribbean plate and the South American plate, which causes activity seismic in the national territory “.
They indicate that the area with the highest seismic activity in our country corresponds to a strip of about 100 km wide, defined along the mountainous systems of the Andes, the Central Cordillera and the Cordillera Oriental, places where the main seismogenic fault systems in the country: Boconó, San Sebastián and El Pilar; to which other minor active systems such as Oca-Ancón, Valera, La Victoria and Urica are added.
Funvisis “urges the Venezuelan population to promote seismic culture with the aim of reducing the vulnerability of our buildings and structures, since earthquakes are events that occur without prior notice, which is why we must be prepared to face them.”
