Earthquake in Groningen Village of Thesinge: Update on Gas Extraction and Residents’ Case

Dec 9, 2023 at 9:07 AM Update: 24 minutes ago

An earthquake with a magnitude of 1.7 occurred in the Groningen village of Thesinge on the night of Friday to Saturday. The earthquake occurred just after 12:30 am, the KNMI reports.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 3 kilometers. There was also an earthquake in the village on November 25, with a magnitude of 0.4. Thesinge is close to the city of Groningen.

The earthquakes in Groningen and the surrounding area are caused by gas extraction in the province. The strongest earthquake in the area to date was on August 16, 2012 near Huizinge in North Groningen. The earthquake had a magnitude of 3.6.

The Groningen gas tap was closed in October, sixty years after the start of gas extraction. Now the tap may only be opened in an emergency.

Residents of Groningen do not agree with this and have therefore filed a case to force the tap to be closed permanently. The Council of State will rule in the case on December 22.
