New York

The city of New York and the surrounding area were hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 on Friday, the American geological institute USGS reports. The consequences seem limited. There are no reports of injuries or major damage.

New Yorkers can continue with their daily activities, New York Mayor Eric Adams told a press conference. The situation will continue to be monitored and inspections are taking place. Schools remain open. Authorities are taking possible aftershocks into account and advise people to prepare for them.

The epicenter of the quake was in New Jersey, but could be felt in neighboring New York and other nearby states. The earthquake occurred near Lebanon, at a depth of 4.7 kilometers. The quake briefly affected air traffic in several states, the American Aviation Authority (FAA) reported. But flights can again be flown to and from all airports in New York.

Shortly after the quake, New Yorkers were advised by a notification on their phones to stay indoors and to call emergency services if injured, according to The New York Times. That report contained a link to a USGS page with information about what people can do to protect themselves during an earthquake.

President Joe Biden is aware of the earthquake. The White House is in contact with national, state and local officials, a spokesperson said.
