WOENSDRECHT – It is a beautiful weekend and the first grass pollens have been in the air since this week. This can cause hay fever symptoms for those who are very sensitive. The start of the grass pollen season is therefore very early! The nuisance will gradually increase in the coming weeks. The peak period of the grass pollen season will probably start three weeks earlier than normal this year.

After a record warm February and a record warm March, nature is about three weeks ahead of the normal schedule for this century. As a result, we have already passed the peak of the birch pollen season. Most pollen ended up in the air at the end of March and beginning of April, the weeks around Easter. In the coming weeks, the birches will gradually finish blooming and the nuisance for those who are only sensitive to tree pollen will quickly decrease. Oaks and beech trees will bloom en masse in the near future, but few people are allergic to the pollen from those trees.

And because April has started off particularly softly, the grass is now developing quickly. The first flowering grasses, such as the large foxtail, have been spotted. In the coming weeks, more and more grass species will bloom and the risk of hay fever complaints due to flowering grass will gradually increase.

Tips to reduce complaints

About 2 million Dutch people have a grass pollen allergy. Flowering birch trees also still cause many complaints. About 1 million Dutch people suffer from this. Below are some tips for people with hay fever to reduce the symptoms:

1. Use your hay fever medication on time (preventively).

2. Shower before going to bed to wash pollen from your hair and keep your pillow clean.

3. Wash your clothes regularly and do not dry them in the open air.

4. Keep windows and doors closed or use pollen-resistant screens.

5. Apply Vaseline to the inside of your nose so that the pollen grains stick to the Vaseline and do not end up on your mucous membranes. Vaseline can also help around your eyes.

6. Use (sun)glasses. This makes it harder for the pollen to get into your eyes.

7. Avoid physically strenuous outdoor activities.

8. Choose the right plants in your garden and not the plants that bother you.
