Australians are set to be “among the first in the world” to receive a vaccine against Covid-19 after the government reached an agreement of 1.7 billion Australian dollars (1.2 billion US dollars) with pharmaceutical companies to obtain free mass vaccinations starting in early 2006. 2021.

In a statement issued late Sunday, the Australian government said, if the “promising trials prove successful,” Australia will receive 84.8 million vaccine doses from the University of Oxford and drug giant AstraZeneca, in addition to a vaccine nomination from the University of Queensland Australia and the biotechnology company.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said: “By securing production and supply agreements, Australians will be among the first in the world to receive a safe and effective vaccine if – that is, vaccines – pass the late-stage tests.”

He continued, “There are no guarantees that these vaccines will prove successful, but the agreement places Australia at the top of the waiting list.”

The country will ensure the provision of 3.8 million doses as early as January 2021, with the remaining doses available gradually throughout the year.

The vaccines will be provided free of charge to Australians and “are almost entirely manufactured in Melbourne”.

Morrison also said he is committed to providing early vaccines to Pacific countries and regional partners in Southeast Asia.

On Monday, the Australian state of Victoria, the epicenter of the second wave of the outbreak in the country, recorded 41 new cases of coronavirus – the lowest one-day increase in the state since June – and nine deaths due to Covid-19.

The total number of deaths in the state so far stands at 675, and nationwide to 762.
