EA canceled Harry Potter MMO

According to a recent interview, Electronic Arts was involved in the production of a game in the MMO genre of the Harry Potter series. The title will have been canceled because the producer doubted the potential strength and longevity of the Harry Potter franchise.

Kim Salzer, a former EA employee in the product marketing role from 2000 to 2003, at the time the producer owned the copyright to the Harry Potter games, provided this information in a recent interview with The Real Brandolorian channel on Twitch.

When asked about a title she had worked on but which in the end didn’t see the light of day, she ended up mentioning the Harry Potter MMO.

One of the biggest for me, because I was personally very involved, and it’s a giant intellectual property that is still alive today, it was a massively multiplayer Harry Potter game.“, replied Salzer.

We did in-depth research, we had the beta built, it was kind of an offline/online experience where we would send physical bonuses to the kids in the mail, like prizes and bows, stuff like that. Lots of study, I was very confident in the success of this. But it was canceled because, for lack of better expression, EA was going through some changes and they simply didn’t know or believed that this intellectual property had only one or two more years to live.“.

As for Harry Potter’s new additions to the video game world, the RPG Hogwarts Legacy has been announced, which is scheduled for release in 2022. When it launches, Hogwarts Legacy will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

The franchise comprises seven main books, later adapted into eight films. There are currently two spin-offs within the Fantastic Monsters saga and the third has its premiere scheduled for April 15, 2022 (USA).
